Mt. Deception 8/30-31/2011

Mountains peek from the clouds from the Royal Basin Trail as it crosses a meadow/avalanche shoot.

(Left) Lupine are just beginning to bloom, due to a late season and a cool summer.  (Right) Heading towards our high camp in upper Royal Basin, the clouds envelope everything.

Our base camp at sunrise, lucky as the sun’s rays hit the sky the clouds dispersed and we were able to see Mt. Deception (left) and Martin Peak right. Deception is the second highest peak in the Olympics, but Martin appears larger due to its proximity.

Wispy clouds catch early light as the sun rises.

(Left) Leif Whittaker looks up at Martin Peak, Deception is to his right just out of sight. (Right) here I look down the snow gully we climbed to get almost to the summit ridge. The snow was very steep, about 60 degrees at times but solid.

View of the Needles from the summit of Mt. Deception.

(Right) Leif Whittaker strikes his summit pose.

The view from the top, the Needles to the right and Royal Basin stretching below.

Our rout from base camp to summit.
